School and Community Involvement

The teacher fosters relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support students’ learning and well-being.

I greatly desired to not just be a part of students' lives in the classroom but also a part of their lives outside the classroom as well. I totally support extracurricular activities--from sports to the arts--because I believe these types of programs help develop students holistically and end up improving each student in the classroom as well. Therefore, throughout my Student Teaching semester, I was intentional about being involved in all of the extracurricular school and community events. I helped organize a school-wide poetry slam, tutored twice a week, attended multiple plays and orchestra and chorus concerts, and attended sports events weekly. Though I wanted to be supportive of Shelby High School and its community, my primary motivations for all these actions were to support my students. Personally, I believe that showing a student support and showing interest in student's interests is integral to helping grow responsible, intelligent, compassionate people. I also have been very involved in my church's youth group for the past two years, and I helped lead youth every Wednesday and every Sunday night.
