Community Involvement

My community involvement within the past semester of my Student Teaching (spring 2011)

Poetry Slam!

While completing my Student Teaching at Shelby High School, I joined the committee that planned and led the annual Poetry Slam. I led the publicity of the event for the freshman class, organized the program, and helped with set-up and clean-up of the event. My students were strongly encouraged to participate in this event, and I had a total of seven students compete.

Camper Scamper 5K

One of Shelby High School's events throughout the year was a student-led 5K called the Camper Scamper to benefit Camp Safe Haven. Representing the faculty, I joined a few other teachers and ran the race (5th place!).

Sporting Events and The Arts

Because I value maintaining a healthy relationship with my students, I asked my students for schedules of all the events they were involved in: sporting games, theater productions ("The Unsinkable Molly Brown"), and orchestra and chorus concerts. Throughout the spring semester, I went to at least one extracurricular event per week to show my support for each of my students.

Tutoring

Throughout the spring semester, I stayed after school and tutored a student in Algebra I. I also spent a few sessions tutoring multiple students in English I.

Youth group

In addition to my involvement at Shelby High School, I also am very involved with my church's youth group. Every Sunday and Wednesday night, I lead a High School Bible study. I have also helped lead various retreats and service projects.
